LivingSocial and Chase introduce a Card that Rewards Consumers

Living Social Visa LivingSocial, one of the major players in the Daily Deal sector and Chase, the consumer and commercial banking known as JPMorgan Chase & Co., have partnered to introduce a grant program which offers rewards to consumers for the money they spend on discounts. This grant program will provide subscribers with a JPMorgan Chase credit card which is much like a rewards points card. By using the card, subscribers will be provided with five points for every dollar spent on daily deal purchased from LivingSocial. In addition, customers will earn additional three points for dinning and one point for all other purchases. So, every time a purchase is made using the rewards card, the subscriber has a chance of earning a minimum of one point for each purchase. These reward points can be later redeemed for future purchase on the LivingSocial website. Every 100 reward points will be replaced for a dollar on any purchases from LivingSocial.

The director of Chase Card Services had told press release last Tuesday that they are “pleased to offer social-buying enthusiasts a product that enhances their shopping experience with the ability to earn rewards for their purchases.” (Nathan Eddy, eWeek.com)

LivingSocial together with Chase has taken a step in the right direction by introducing a reward program for their consumers. Similar to many other rewards programs offered by various retailers, this gives consumers yet another reason to shop for online coupons.

Online Coupons is an Environmentally Friendly Option!

The new trend is that everything seems to be going green these days. There are millions of trees being cut down to accommodate the paper couponing industry. In an article by Drew Hendricks it is estimated that 1.135 million trees are cut down and processed to print paper grocery coupons every month. (Newswatch, National Geographic, 2012/01/05). That is roughly equivalent to 2,500 acres of woods. A total of 13.62 million trees are used each year to print coupons. (Hendricks, Newswatch) That being said, online couponing and daily deals not only save buyers money but they save trees, which is an environmentally friend option which has far more benefits than the contrary. As Hendricks states in his article more and more consumers are discovering a way to reduce such paper use, while gaining more convenience and reducing clutter. Instead of clipping paper coupons, they are opting for electronic coupons. The trend towards online buying and online shopping has also encouraged merchants and vendors to lean towards the online world for promoting deals and discounts.

These days you can shop for coupons online via your computer or your mobile phone, purchase them online, organize/mange them online and take it to a vendor electronically using a Smartphone. This process has eliminated the option of printing your coupons and more retailer are adopting the method of scanning the bar codes directly from Smartphone. The airline industry is already using this method and has given travelers an option of scanning bar codes electronically.

By switching to online and mobile coupons, we may start getting less junk mail in our mailboxes (Hendricks, Newswatch). Although you may still be getting junk mails in your electronic mailbox, those are far easier to sort than the physical junk mails which often creates a clutter in your home. Another advantage of online coupons are that some digital coupons feature deals that includes free shipping thus reducing your trips to the store, saving you mileage, travel time and money. “Let your fingers do the work to compare prices online, instead of driving around town.” (Hendricks, Newswatch)

Many people have already switched to online banking and bill payment, reducing the amount of paper they use and clearing out clutter. (Hendricks, Newswatch) It may not be immediately obvious, but by going online you can also go green and help promote an environmentally friendly option.

Organization and product changes at LivingSocial

Based on Startupstat, co-founder Eddie Fredrick from Living Social will be stepping down from the Management team. This was announced by Tom O’Shaughnessy, the CEO, via email to their team.

It would be interesting to see the new direction of the company. Eddie had primarily helped with user acquisitions – a crucial part in the company. Its not yet known why he decided to step down.

Living Social also released another news stating that they no longer will be offering Living social instant. I personally thought that side of the business would be the one that will be doing well. It allows for merchants to offer quick hourly deals for those non peak hours in an aim to fill the spots. So its interesting to see them go away from
that model. Instead they are going to a foodscoorge ‘s(recently acquired by wagjag) concept of grocery. Don’t get me wrong, I think the grocery daily deals is also fantastic – just interested to know why they took the Living Social instant off. More importantly, will Groupon follow suit by getting rid of their Groupon Now model?

Is Groupon Scheduler a wise move for Groupon?

Groupon Scheduler

Groupon formally launched their beta version of Groupon Scheduler last week. This was expected upon the purchase of OpenCal back in September 2011. They tested the market with the scheduler in December but personally didn’t think they would launch it so soon. Back to the question, is this a wise move for Groupon? Groupon’s business model is partially based on the fact that some consumers might not use their coupons. In fact, based on a study from eMarket.com, conservative estimates place the unused coupons at 20%. This is cash in the businesses pockets without having to lift a finger.

What would entice a business to use the calendar to facilitate the ease of use of the coupons? I have casually asked a few of the restaurants that I had used coupons at last week if they would use such a service. As ethical as everyone would love to be, most of the owners responded with a ‘no’ for obvious reasons. As much as we love Groupon’s initiative for making such a useful tool freely available to end users and businesses – we feel it might hurt their business concept and their pitch slightly.

On the other hand, I did have a chance to signup for the Groupon Scheduler and feel that this would be a fantastic tool to manage resources, services and locations for any business. In particular, I love their initial dashboard. This shows an executive summary of the appointments, new clients and failed appointments. I definitely do encourage all business to be ethical and sign up to such a service to better handle the volume and reservations.

Best of luck.

My son showed interest in playing the guitar. So we began looking for places for lessons.  That’s when we were recommended to Jeff! After meeting with Jeff, we decided we were comfortable with his approach and genuine care for the students. The pricing and environment was great and our son actually wanted to practice. He now has several guitars and plays all the time! Thanks Jeff! — Kelly, Music Fundamentals School of Music Student

Genisea R, TripAdvisor.com

“Then, there was our Villa. We stayed in a 2 bedroom/2 story Villa this time (rather than the 1 bedroom/1 story like we had last time) that had quite literally just been finished. It was every bit as incredible as we had remembered, except this particularly Villa was decked out with granite countertops, copper sinks and blackened bronze fixtures … it was absolutely FIRST CLASS! And the beachfront view from the master suite on the upper level was OUT OF THIS WORLD! When we had left last time, we really didn’t think that they could improve on our stay … it turns out we were wrong. Cerritos Surf Colony just keeps getting better!!”

John Brunelle, TripAdvisor.com

“My 3 surfing buddies and two of our girlfriends found out about the Cerritos Surf Colony by accident. We stayed in really cool little villas right on the beach, and the waves were right out the door. I have been all over the Baja and stumbling onto this little gem within an hour of Cabo was the highlight of our trip. We stayed in really cute two BR villas, with little kitchens and our own hammocks…waking up to the beachfront view was unbelievable!”

Travis J., TripAdvisor.com
